The Rise of Internet Bingo
The origin of bingo can be traced all the way back to 1530. Bingo was played in Italy as a lottery style game and over the years the French added callers and the modern version was born. In the US bingo was a popular carnival game known as 'beano'. During the Great War bingo was the only game approved by the British Armed Forced command. Today there are well over 100 million bingo players around the world. In 1996 bingo made its first appearance on the internet and the rest is history. Increased broadband access has greatly increased the number of online bingo players around the world.
The UK has the largest per capita bingo market in the world. Estimates put the worth of Today's British bingo market at £800 pounds. (Well over $1 billion USD) The bingo sector is one of the fastest growing gambling markets in the world. There are over 4 million bingo players in the UK, up 1 million from just a few years ago. About 80% of all bingo players are women and in the United States the figure is even higher. In the UK the figure varies between 70% and 80%. More males play bingo in the UK than in the United States.
The largest bingo jackpot even won was £1.16 which was won by a cleaner in Scotland. The biggest lottery win was £656 million which was won in the United States. 50% of all UK based bingo players say they play every day. The average age of a typical bingo player is 38 and a majority of all bingo players fall in the age range between 35 and 49. 13.7% of all bingo players are between the ages of 18 and 24, 5.8% are between 50n and 54 and players above 65 only account for 2.9% of all players. So much for the stereotype of a bingo player as a little old lady sitting in a smoky church basement.
A majority of UK bingo players divide their playing time between live bingo halls and online bingo sites. Today many young women consider bingo to be their 'night on the town' and bingo operators have taken steps to make their halls more attractive to young players. Many men now attend bingo games which should come as no surprise since they are outnumbered by ladies 10 to 1. 61% of all women who play bingo games say it makes them happier and reduces stress.
