younger bingo playersIn the UK the Rank Group operates a chain of Mecca bingo halls and Grosvenor casinos. Mecca has long been a major British bingo brand and dates back to the 60s. During the 60s Eric Morley brought bingo across the Atlantic and felt that the many abandoned dance halls and cinemas in the UK would be perfect venues for bingo games. In short order Mecca was one of the most recognized bingo brands in the UK. Eventually the Rank Group acquired Mecca bingo and the move has remained profitable to this day.

Recently Rank refurbished several bingo halls and casinos to attract young players. The move has been very successful and earlier in the year Rank reported an 8% rise in profits. Rank said that players in the 25 to 35 age bracket are responsible for most of the growth.

Ranks 103 Mecca bingo halls attracted about 55,000 new players making the total customer base 770,000. Grosvenor Casinos attracted 66,000 new players increasing the number of customers to 762,000. Ian Burke, Ranks chief executive believes there is even more opportunity in the youth gaming market especially for bingo. Burke said that 65% of all bingo players are over 35.

Mr. Burke would not comment on the company's talks with Gala Coral to acquire the company's casino business. In March Rank ended the talks. Rank could also recover 275gbp in overpaid taxes after the winning a ruling at the European Court of Justice last November after the company claimed it overpaid VAT taxes. Investec analyst Paul Leyland said that Rank made "strong operational progress across the group" even though a recent smoking ban in Spain led to a decline in the company's Spanish revenues. Rank is investing heavily in remodeling all of their bingo halls and casinos. Rank has introduced later opening hours and games targeting the youth market such as rock and roll bingo. In rock and roll bingo, games numbers are replaced with pop song titles - similar to Fresh Music Fridays at BingoHouse.

Rank's after dark games are marketed through the social networking site Facebook. BingoHouse's facebook page has 1,500 followers - you should check it out now for exclusive promotions. Rank reported revenue growth for all of its UK brands including the online betting firm of Blue Square.
